Cricket is the UK’s 2nd largest sport and one of the most gear intensive sports globally. However, the production of cricket gear is not aligned to net zero/circularity practices, producing an annual waste of 1624 tonnes of cricket. Additionally, the cricket gear lifecycle currently features little repair and refurbishment, and limited reuse, while the manufacture of cricket gear is predominantly carried out in Asia, thus increasing the embedded carbon of imported cricket gear.
This project aims to challenge exiting practices in design and production of cricket gear in the UK by:
(i) developing socially manufactured circular designed cricket pads using biomaterials grown/produced in the UK, recycled, and reused materials/ components
(ii) training social enterprises to make, repair and refurbish cricket pads.
