Edward Smith

Design Exchange Partnerships 2024

Dr Edward Smith is a Senior Research Fellow in the Textile Engineering and Materials (TEAM) Research Group at De Montfort University, Leicester.

Edward is a chemist specialising in textiles, fibres and dyes with a PhD in Colour and Polymer Chemistry. Within TEAM he has been involved in a range of research projects which have been funded either by UK research bodies, the European Union or by industry. The outcomes from this research have contributed significantly to the area of sustainable textile processing including the development and characterisation of high value cottonised bast fibres, enzyme modification to improve the performance of wool fibre/textiles and enzymatic textile coloration, and have led to peer reviewed journal publications of which he is a co-author.

He teaches both undergraduate and postgraduate textile students through lecturing, leading practicals and project supervision in the areas of textile fibre properties, identification and analysis, textile coloration and textile sustainability.
